WildSafeBC urges campers to keep wildlife wild.
Camping season is upon us in British Columbia; a place that is considered ‘wildlife country.’ While planning this year’s outdoor adventures, be prepared for wildlife encounters and leave zero trace. Research if you’re heading into grizzly habitat, check the expiry date on your bear spray, and know exactly what to do in case you encounter wildlife of any size, notably bear, wolf, cougar, and coyote.
For campsites – leave them bare when you’re not there, or sleeping. Secure any scented item in a hard-sided vehicle or bear-resistant container to prevent attracting wildlife, including food, cooking equipment, coolers (empty or full), citronella, personal hygiene products like deodorant and toothpaste, as well as pet food. Please never feed wildlife.
With acknowledgement of the ancestral Indigenous lands utilized to work, play, grow, and learn, it is vital to protect the beauty, serenity, and diversity of BC’s wilderness today, so we can experience it for generations to come. Thank you for keeping campsites safe and wildlife wild.
